Saint Josephine Bakhita, commemorated on Feb. 8th

A Belated Welcome to Unit 19.  Here are a few notes for the week:

TIP of the MORNING: "Keep your paragraphs short.  Writing is visual--it catches the eye before it has the chance to catch the brain.  Short paragraphs put air around what you write and make it look inviting, whereas a long chunk of type can discourage a reader from even starting to read." William Zinsser, On Writing Well, p. 79

POEM of the WEEK: "The Quitter" by Anonymous.  Recited by Greta Burkhard

Student and instructor contributions for "Poem of the Week" are welcome.  Send a message to Mr. Rolling with "Poem of the Week," and the title and author of the poem you would like to recite.

REMEDIAL DAY & A WORKING BREAK: Next week, Monday is a "remedial day" for catching up quizzes, putting your house in order, getting ahead on COMPS, and prepping for exams coming in Unit 20.  More generally, notice that both our Fall Break (back in October) and Spring Break, now, are working breaks.  These breaks fit into the schedule to give a bit of time for rest and catch up, rather than being full holiday/time-off breaks like Christmas and Easter.  Be sure to use the time prudently to manage your academic needs.

WISDOM of the SAINTS: "Be good, love the Lord, pray for those who do not know him. What a great grace it is to know God!"   St. Josephine Bakhita
